What is a good profit margin for a market stall business?
Market stall margins vary widely by product, but many stallholders run gross margins between 40% and 65% since they are selling direct to the public without a middleman markup. Net margin is usually thinner once you count stall fees, travel, and setup time, often landing between 10% and 25% depending on how many market days you work each month.
How do I calculate profit margin for a market stall?
Start with your gross margin: (Sales minus cost of goods) divided by Sales. Then subtract stall or pitch fees, travel and fuel, packaging, and any staff help, to get your real net margin per market day. Because most stallholders only trade certain days of the week, it matters to calculate this per trading day, not just per month.
Do I need to count travel and setup time as a cost?
Yes. Fuel, parking, and the hours spent setting up and packing down a stall are real costs even though they do not show up on a receipt. Many stallholders underprice their time this way, so it is worth checking whether certain markets or days consistently cost more in your time and travel than they return in sales.
Is this market stall profit calculator free?
Yes. The calculator is free, gives you a full result with no signup required, and works in any currency. It is built and maintained by a licensed CPA as part of Margini Financial's free tools for small store owners.
